AMERICAN RECORD GUIDE MARCH/APRIL 2018 " HERNESNIEMI: Piano Pieces Antti Samuli Hernesniemi, p MSR 1615—44 minutes Antti Samuli Hernesniemi is a Helsinki composer-pianist who specializes in folk and jazz influenced northern colors and lights. This album is the third in a series. The composer is interested in keyboard sound, and the pleasure here is the sonority of different keyboard instruments, which all suit the piece they were written for: a Yamaha Clavinova, a Steinway, and a Bechstein Grand Piano. The Clavinova works are 4 Poems, Shore, and City. The latter attempts to find “a peaceful route between the huge, harp angled” buildings of a large city. These are turbulent, rolling walls of sound, dissonant but compelling, modernist but expressive. The Three Waltzes combine a big, bold sound with traditional waltz rhythm and old-fashioned melody.
